We’re expert home remodelers – not expert landscapers. When it comes to remodeling, we have a pretty foolproof design-build approach. We know exactly what we’re doing. Landscaping? Not so much.
Would you ask your landscaper to remodel your bathroom? Probably not. Would you ask your home remodeler to fix up your lawn? Again, probably not. If you did ask us, chances are we’d politely turn you down.
Nothing against landscaping – it’s just not in our wheelhouse.
Enter this particular Chicago client. He saw no issue with asking us to beautify his lawn. And instead of saying no, we actually did.
Let’s start at the beginning…
Tender Loving Care Needed
When we first arrived at this client’s property, we couldn’t help but notice that his lawn could use some TLC. But we were there to beautify the interior of this client’s home (or so we thought). The greenery outside his home was not on our minds.
Except for one aspect of it.
We’re big on communicating with our clients about any potential damage to their home that might happen in the course of remodeling. That’s why we made sure to tell this client there was a possibility that some of the product delivery trucks would leave marks on his lawn.
As we expected, he wasn’t bothered by this at all. After all, his lawn had certainly seen better days. He gave us a verbal green light to proceed with his whole house remodel.
Landscaping Was NOT In The Contract
Needless to say, when this client signed our contract for his whole house remodel, there was absolutely no mention of landscaping – not a hint of lawn work.
That turned out to be totally irrelevant.
As we foreshadowed, during product delivery, one of the delivery company’s trucks made grooves on the client’s front lawn. When the client saw the visible tire tracks on his front lawn, he was no longer sanguine about damage to his property.
Actually, he was downright distraught.
We’re Different From Other Remodelers
At this point, the average remodeling company would refer back to the client’s verbal okay. They also would point out that landscaping was not in the original contract the client signed.
But we’re not most remodeling companies. And our modus operandi is not like most.
We do everything we can to make you happy – even things that are uncomfortable or hard for us. That’s just who we are. In fact, it’s an essential part of our origin story.
By now, you can probably guess where this is headed… Yep, we decided to assume the landscaping mantle after all.
Interior + Exterior Home Remodel
Here’s how our one and only landscaping venture went down:
During our final inspection of the client’s home – which turned out STUNNING, by the way – we assured him that we would completely rectify any damage that was done to his lawn.
We immediately hired a lawn service to fill in the grooves on the client’s lawn with sod and grass. Within seven days, the landscaper showed up and did his thing. The client was happy with both the inside and the outside of his home. We were happy that he was happy.
Fixing this client’s lawn cost us close to $850. It cost the client ZERO dollars. But to us, a client’s happiness is worth any price.
